A 22-year prison sentence was handed down on Wednesday, 30 July 2025, to a man convicted of housebreaking with intent to rape. The case, presided over by Magistrate Pillay Botes, was prosecuted by Mr. Sammie Camphor and investigated by Detective Warrant Officer D Twala of the Vrede Family, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences Unit.
The incident occurred in the early hours of 24 September 2024 in Ezenzeleni Township near Warden. At approximately 02:00, the victim was asleep when she was awakened by the sound of an intruder moving inside her home. Upon investigating, she encountered the accused, Sibusiso Malinga, in the corridor.
Malinga immediately grabbed her, covering her mouth to prevent her from screaming. He then forced her into the bathroom, threatened her with a knife, and stabbed her in the right hand before raping her twice. After the assault, he fled the scene on foot.
The victim managed to seek help when she spotted a police patrol vehicle passing by. She stopped the officers and reported the crime, leading to Malinga’s subsequent arrest.
Following a thorough investigation and court proceedings, Malinga was found guilty and sentenced to 22 years of direct imprisonment.
