Mother and Two Others Arrested for Encouraging Child to Smoke Mandrax in Shocking Viral Video

A mother and two other individuals have been arrested in Newclare, Johannesburg, after a disturbing video surfaced showing a four-year-old child being encouraged to light and smoke Mandrax, an illegal drug.

The footage, which has gone viral, depicts the young boy assisting his mother as she smokes the drug using a bottleneck. The child has since been removed from the home and placed in a safe environment.

Suspects Confess to Drug Use and Filming Incident

Authorities identified the mother, who matched the description in the video, and upon questioning, she revealed the identities of two other adults involved—one of whom recorded the incident. Police spokesperson confirmed that all three suspects, aged between 28 and 36, admitted to using Mandrax and filming the child’s participation.

They now face charges of child abuse and are expected to appear in the Johannesburg Regional Court on Thursday.

Child Rights Organizations Express Concern

Child welfare advocates have raised alarms over the long-term psychological damage the incident may have caused the child.

“I hope it was only a single occurrence, but it is such a traumatic thing that will carry through his life if he doesn’t get proper counseling and support,” said a representative from a local child rights organization.

The case has also reignited concerns about children’s safety in their own homes. “This was captured on video, but we see so many cases where children are exposed to things they shouldn’t be at a young age. It is unacceptable and has a deeply traumatic impact,” the advocate added.

Broader Implications for Child Protection

The incident has sparked outrage and calls for stronger measures to protect vulnerable children from substance abuse and neglect. Authorities urge the public to report any suspected cases of child endangerment.

As investigations continue, the focus remains on ensuring the child receives the necessary care while the accused face legal consequences for their actions.
