Nkomazi Residents Face Water Crisis After Vandalism at Treatment Plant

Thousands of residents in Nkomazi, Mpumalanga, are bracing for days without water after critical infrastructure at a local water treatment facility was vandalized and stripped of equipment. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday night, has left at least seven villages and a local hospital without reliable water supply.

Repeated Vandalism Disrupts Water Supply

The Nkomazi Local Municipality confirmed that this is the third such incident in a short period. Thieves targeted pump stations and the treatment plant, stealing copper cables and damaging essential equipment. Municipal officials estimate that around 6,000 residents are affected and say repairs could cost approximately R80,000—a significant challenge for the cash-strapped municipality.

Community Struggles Amid Financial Crisis

Residents, already accustomed to inconsistent water supply, have resorted to storing water in containers. However, with no immediate solution in sight, fears are growing that the situation will worsen over the coming days.

The municipality, which is already in financial distress, may struggle to fund the repairs. Reports indicate that the Nkomazi Local Municipality has failed to pay employees and creditors for months and recently sought a R100 million loan to address its financial woes. The crisis has been compounded by allegations of mismanagement, leading to the resignation of the municipal manager and the suspension of the chief financial officer.

Calls for Action

Local authorities have condemned the vandalism, urging community members to report suspicious activity. Meanwhile, affected residents are left hoping for a swift resolution as the water shortage threatens daily life and healthcare services.

Investigations are ongoing, and updates are expected as the municipality assesses the full extent of the damage.
