Police Officer Arrested in Bloemfontein Abduction and Extortion Case

A 42-year-old police officer has appeared in the Bloemfontein Magistrates Court in connection with the alleged abduction of 19-year-old Kamogelo Baukudi and a subsequent ransom demand made to his mother.

Philemon Adoons faces additional charges of extortion after investigators linked him to the ransom call. The court remanded him in custody until his next appearance on Friday, when he is expected to apply for bail.

Identity Parade Concerns Lead to Media Restrictions

The prosecution objected to media requests to record inside the courtroom or identify the suspect, citing an imminent identity parade. Authorities emphasized the need to protect the ongoing investigation.

“There is a reason why we kept his identity [hidden]—to ensure that part of the investigation is not compromised,” a police official stated.

Abduction Details

Baukudi was reportedly abducted last Thursday when two men stopped him and his driver, claiming their vehicle was suspected of carrying drugs. The driver immediately reported the incident at the Park Road Police Station.

Calls for Increased Police Action

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) provincial secretary condemned the rising crime levels in the Free State, urging law enforcement to intensify efforts.

“It’s clear that the whole of Bloemfontein has become a crime scene,” the EFF official said. “Police need to up their game because criminals are making this their permanent place of operation.”

Premier Commends Police, Pledges Support

Free State Premier Mxolisi Dukwana praised the police for their swift action, emphasizing that the arrest demonstrates the SAPS’s commitment to justice, even when suspects are within their ranks.

“As government, we applaud the SAPS for showing no bias in dealing with cases,” Dukwana said. “People must not lose hope in the South African Police Service.”

The premier confirmed that the government is supporting Baukudi’s family and remains hopeful for his safe return.

Investigations continue as authorities work to locate the missing teenager and uncover further details in the case.
