Helen Zille Considers Run for Johannesburg Mayor, Citing ‘Unfinished Business’

Johannesburg, South Africa – Democratic Alliance (DA) Federal Council Chairperson Helen Zille has revealed she is considering a run for mayor of Johannesburg, stating she has “unfinished business” in the city.

In an interview, Zille confirmed she had been approached both internally and externally to stand as the DA’s mayoral candidate in the upcoming local government elections. While she did not disclose who had approached her, she emphasized the DA’s competitive selection process, stating, “We don’t have coronations in the DA, we have competition.”

Why Johannesburg?

Zille described Johannesburg as “very broken” and stressed that fixing the city is crucial for South Africa’s broader economic recovery. “If we don’t get Johannesburg right, we can’t get South Africa right,” she said, highlighting issues such as water shortages, potholes, unreliable electricity, and rising crime as key challenges.

Born in Johannesburg and raised in Hillbrow, Zille expressed personal dismay at the city’s decline. “It’s very sad for me to see how it’s unraveled,” she said, adding that its status as South Africa’s economic hub makes its stability vital for investment.

Polarizing Figure?

When questioned about her polarizing political history and whether her candidacy might complicate coalition negotiations, Zille dismissed concerns, saying the public response had been “very positive.” She argued that effective governance, not popularity, should be the focus. “If voters want water in their taps and potholes fixed, they know what to do,” she said.

Zille also pointed to her experience in coalition governance and turning around Cape Town and the Western Cape as key qualifications.

DA’s Rigorous Selection Process

The DA’s mayoral candidate will be chosen through a multi-stage selection process, including screenings, presentations, and rigorous questioning. Zille stressed that no candidate is guaranteed the position, including herself.

Federal Leadership vs. Mayoral Bid

Zille acknowledged she faces a choice between seeking re-election as Federal Council chairperson—a role she has mastered—or taking on the “big challenge” of Johannesburg. “I’ve got to decide whether I want a peaceful life or a challenging life,” she quipped.

Call for Competition

Encouraging others to apply, Zille directed potential candidates to the DA’s application portal, apply.da.org.za, while noting that applicants must be DA members and willing to reside in Johannesburg.

What’s Next?

Zille has not yet confirmed her decision but said she will announce her intentions soon. If she runs and wins the DA’s selection, Johannesburg voters will have a high-profile—and contentious—figure leading the party’s campaign in 2026.

For now, the political spotlight remains on whether one of South Africa’s most seasoned politicians will step back into local government for what she calls her “unfinished business.”
