The Stellenbosch University council has appointed a committee of three to investigate claims that Vice-Chancellor Wim de Villiers, using his discretionary powers, made special places available for two close relatives in the highly sought-after medical degree.
According to BusinessLIVE, there are about 12 000 applicants for the degree course, but only about 300 places.
The university council met on Monday to consider a vote of no confidence in De Villiers, tabled by council member Dr Leon Schreiber. Last week, the university convocation confirmed its support for a vote of no confidence in the Vice-Chancellor. The council decided instead to establish a three-person committee to investigate the claims and submit a report.
The committee will investigate the facts underlying the motion, including allegations of nepotism and a possible breach of rules in relation to the Rector’s discretionary placements (RDP) and placements of relatives of the Rector and Vice-Chancellor.
Dr Nicky Newton-King, deputy chair of the university council, said: ‘The allegations of nepotism are grave and council recognises the impact this issue has had on Stellenbosch University stakeholders.’
She said once the council had received the report it would ‘evaluate and consider the motion brought by Dr [Leon] Schreiber’ and that the council recognised the importance of addressing it as a ‘matter of urgency”.
The council also decided that the concept of the Rector’s discretionary placement should be reviewed.
BusinessLIVE reports that the scandal has split sentiment among senior members of staff. Schreiber was attacked by former public protector Thuli Madonsela, a Stellenbosch University staff member, on Twitter, with Madonsela claiming Schreiber’s motion of no confidence was a political rather than an ethical move.
