In his visit to South Sudan, Pope Francis said people with “homosexual tendencies” are children of God and should be welcomed by their churches.

COMMENTS BY POPE BACKED BY ARCHBISHOP

The comments by the Pope were backed by the Archbishop of Canterbury. He travelled with the Pope to South Sudan where they called for peace in the war-torn country.

This is the first time that the leaders of the three traditions have come together for such a journey in 500 years.

The three Christian leaders spoke out on LGBTQ rights before returning home from South Sudan

“I entirely agree with every word he said there,” said Archbishop Welby, stating that the Anglican church had its own internal divisions over gay rights.

OVER 100 000 PEOPLE AT THE MASS

The open-air Mass was held at the grounds of a mausoleum for South Sudan’s liberation hero John Garang.

According to the Vatican, over 100 000 people attended the Mass. Many in the crowd sang and played drums as the Pope entered the dusty area.

In his speech he said that “people with homosexual tendencies are children of God,” he added. “God loves them, God is with them.”

“The criminalization of homosexuality is a problem that cannot be ignored,” said Pope Francis.

    LAST PUBLIC APPEARANCE IN AFRICA

In his final address right before heading to the airport, the pope thanked the people of South Sudan for the love they showed him in the past few days.

“Dear brothers and sisters, I return to Rome with you even closer to my heart,” he told them. “Never lose hope. And lose no opportunity to build peace. May hope and peace dwell among you. May hope and peace dwell in South Sudan!”
