The Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape have picked up on a new trend in vehicle hijackings and wants motorists to be aware.
NEW HIJACKING TREND IN EASTERN CAPE
South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu said investigators have noticed that more expensive vehicles – such as SUVs and newer models – are being hijacked in Kwazakele, New Brighton and Motherwell areas.“It is alleged that suspects are not hijacking the vehicles for re-sale etc. Instead, the drivers/owners and occupants in the vehicle are being robbed for their personal possessions such as cash and cell phones,” said the police spokesperson.
The group of suspects are believed to be a group of between two and nine armed men. The group allegedly hijacks and robs complainants before using the hijacked vehicle to repeat the crime.
Before leaving with the victims’ stolen cellphones and goods, the suspects allegedly told the victims to transfer money using the banking apps on their phones.
“Police are advising people not to sit in their vehicles in the street and chat. Rather take the socializing indoors.
“Always take note of your surroundings and be wary of any group approaching your vehicle or walking close to your vehicle. Be innovative and protect easy accessibility of important personal apps on your cellphones,” said Naidu.
