The police in Ventersdorp arrested the suspect just before midnight on Friday at Tshing, North West for theft of an ambulance.
The 24-year-old man is expected to appear in the Ventersdorp Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of car theft.
The suspect allegedly stole the ambulance in front of the local hospital on December 26, 2024b.
North West Police Spokesperson, Col. Adéle Myburgh says Emergency and Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) staff received a patient who was placed in the ambulance to be transported to a neighbouring hospital.
However, while EMRS was handing over the patient, the suspect drove off with the ambulance with the patient still in the back of the ambulance.
“Police were contacted, who acted immediately and managed to locate and stop the ambulance shortly after the incident in Tshing, Extension 5,” Myburgh said.
The patient was not injured during this incident.
