Malema’s hate speech case begins in the Equality Court on Monday

The South African Human Rights Commission’s (HRC) case against the EFF leader, Julius Malema, regarding his withdrawal of and excuse for certain statements, which amounts to hate speech, begins in the Equality Court in the Western Cape on Monday, February 26.

This case comes after AfriForum filed complaints with the HRC in October 2022 following Malema’s statements during the EFF’s provincial meeting in the Western Cape.

Malema said at this event, which took place on October 16, 2022,: “You should never be afraid to kill, a revolution requires that there be some point, because killing is part of the revolutionary act. ”

AfriForum’s head of public relations, Ernst van Zyl says the HRC has meanwhile found in November 2022 that Malema and the EFF’s statements do amount to hate speech and incitement to violence. The HRC demanded that Malema withdraw his statements within ten days and apologize.

“However, Malema refused. This forced the HRC to turn to the Equality Court to obtain an interim interdict. AfriForum will attend these court proceedings. ”
