EASTERN CAPE — A 45-year-old alleged suspect was killed in a shootout with police in Mpindweni Location, outside Libode, on Tuesday, 22 September 2026. This fatal confrontation occurred as law enforcement officials acted on intelligence linking the individual to the recent murders of two police officers in the area.
The two police officers, aged 51 and 30, were fatally shot on 18 September 2026 at Ziphunzana Location, Libode, near Mthatha. They were actively responding to a reported attack on a local spaza shop at the time of the incident.
According to a police spokesperson, officers arrived at the suspect’s residence on Tuesday with a valid search warrant. During the execution of the warrant, the suspect requested to use the bathroom. Upon opening the bathroom door, the individual opened fire on the waiting officers, prompting immediate and justified retaliation from law enforcement.
The suspect sustained fatal gunshot wounds during the exchange and was declared deceased at the scene.
Following the shootout, police confiscated the firearm used in the attack. A subsequent search of the premises yielded an assortment of additional firearms and ammunition, which were also secured as evidence.
Law enforcement representatives confirmed that this tactical operation forms part of an ongoing multidisciplinary investigation into the killing of the two police officers. The police investigation remains actively underway as authorities continue to pursue justice for the fallen officers.
