FREE STATE – The Welkom Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) has successfully apprehended two alleged Thabong robbery suspects, aged 30 and 32, following a violent armed incident in the area.
On Sunday, 13 September 2026, members of the Welkom AGU were conducting routine crime prevention duties when they received actionable intelligence regarding the whereabouts of one of the wanted individuals. This information was operationalized, leading officers to a specific residential address in Thabong where the first suspect was located and taken into custody.
Subsequent investigative efforts directed police to a second location in Oppenheimer Park, Thabong, resulting in the arrest of the second suspect. During this operation, authorities recovered several items reported stolen during the robbery, including a laptop charger, a backpack, a hat, and an adapter plug. Police also seized two large knives presumed to have been used during the commission of the crime. The complainant has positively identified the recovered items as their stolen property.
According to the case details provided by the Welkom Anti-Gang Unit, the initial incident occurred on Saturday, 5 September 2026. The complainant was accosted by three males while walking to his residence. Two of the assailants allegedly wielded knives and attempted to stab the victim before robbing him of his personal belongings.
A case of robbery with a weapon other than a firearm has been officially registered for further investigation. The Welkom Anti-Gang Unit continues to actively search for the third alleged suspect. The two arrested men are expected to appear before the Welkom Magistrate’s Court in the near future.
