EASTERN CAPE — Teyise Bako, a 64-year-old man, has been sentenced to two concurrent terms of life imprisonment for the rape and attempted murder of his 49-year-old ex-girlfriend following a violent home invasion in Polar Park in February 2025. The sentencing concludes a severe criminal case that saw Bako convicted on multiple charges, including kidnapping and assault.
The harrowing incident occurred on 26 February 2025 at approximately 23:40. The victim was asleep at her residence on Kiviet Street when she was awakened by the sound of breaking glass. Upon investigation, she discovered that Bako, her former boyfriend, had shattered a window in a spare bedroom to forcibly gain entry into the home.
Attempting to escape the intruder, the victim fled the residence to seek help. However, Bako pursued her, catching up to her and stabbing her in the neck with a knife. He then forcibly transported her to his own residence, located a short distance from her home, where he raped her during the night.
The following morning, the traumatized victim reported the ordeal to authorities at SAPS Chatty. This prompt reporting led to Bako’s swift arrest on initial charges of rape, kidnapping, and attempted murder.
Following comprehensive court proceedings, Bako was found guilty on 24 March 2026. On 1 September 2026, the presiding court handed down a stringent sentence across five counts, all ordered to run concurrently:
– Count 1 (Rape): Life imprisonment
– Count 2 (Housebreaking with intent to assault): 4 years’ imprisonment
– Count 3 (Kidnapping): 4 years’ imprisonment
– Count 4 (Attempted murder):** Life imprisonment
– Count 5 (Assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm): 10 years’ imprisonment
In addition to the substantial prison terms, the court declared Bako unfit to possess a firearm. Furthermore, his identifying details have been officially entered into the National Register for Sexual Offenders, ensuring long-term monitoring and upholding public safety measures.
