GAUTENG – The Gauteng Political Killing Task Team (PKTT) has successfully apprehended the alleged mastermind behind a syndicate orchestrating illegal electricity connections and the theft of critical infrastructure within the Emfuleni Local Municipality. This development marks the eighth arrest in the ongoing law enforcement crackdown on regional power theft networks.
According to a statement released by the South African Police Service (SAPS) on Thursday, the suspect was taken into custody shortly after being released on bail for an unrelated matter.
The individual is scheduled to make their first court appearance on Monday, 07 September 2026. They will face multiple serious charges, including theft, damage to and theft of critical infrastructure, and money laundering.
Authorities confirmed that this arrest is a direct result of continuous investigations into a coordinated criminal syndicate operating within the Emfuleni Local Municipality. The network has been systematically exploiting the area’s electrical grid through unauthorized connections and related illicit activities.
SAPS emphasized that the investigation remains active. Law enforcement agencies are currently working to identify, track, and apprehend all remaining individuals linked to the illegal electricity connection network to fully dismantle the operation.
