FREE STATE — A coordinated law enforcement effort has resulted in significant Zastron drug arrests, targeting a localized network distributing crystal meth and mandrax. Three suspects were taken into custody following an extensive, year-long undercover probe aimed at curbing substance abuse and dismantling the supply chains fueling regional criminal syndicates.
The two males, aged 42 and 60, and a 42-year-old female, are expected to make their first appearance in the Zastron Magistrates’ Court to face charges of dealing in drugs.
The suspects were apprehended in the early hours of Wednesday by a formidable multidisciplinary team comprising the Hawks, the Tactical Response Team (TRT), and Crime Intelligence (CI). The successful bust was the culmination of an initiative officially dubbed #OperationDiamond.
Undercover Investigation Yields Results
The groundwork for the operation began in 2025 when members of Crime Intelligence received actionable intelligence regarding the growing proliferation of crystal meth and mandrax within the area. Acting on this information, investigators identified the trio and initiated a series of highly coordinated, simulated transactions. During these undercover operations, the suspects allegedly sold the illicit substances to law enforcement operatives, providing the necessary evidence for their eventual arrest.
Targeting the Root of Gangsterism
Major General Mokgadi Bokaba, the Free State Provincial Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), highlighted the broader impact of the bust on community safety. She noted that the steady supply of illicit substances directly enables and exacerbates other severe criminal activities, including violent crime and gangsterism.
“Cutting the supply of drugs to the town of Matlakeng will help deal with related crimes,” Major General Bokaba stated, emphasizing the strategic importance of targeting the source of the narcotics rather than just the end-users.
Major General Bokaba also commended the seamless collaborative efforts between the Hawks and Crime Intelligence, noting that such joint operations are vital to the success of complex, long-term investigations like #OperationDiamond.
