NORTH WEST — A missing person inquiry in Brits has taken a grim turn after a suspect led authorities to the bound body of a 19-year-old male hidden inside a pit toilet at the R61 Rashoop informal settlement. The horrific discovery was made following an intensive police operation to locate the missing teenager, bringing a swift end to the initial search.
The investigation was triggered on Friday, 7 August 2026, when a missing person docket was opened at the local police station. Detectives acting on crucial intelligence soon identified a person of interest: 46-year-old Johannes Mokoena, who was reportedly the last individual seen in the company of the victim.
Upon his apprehension, Mokoena allegedly cooperated with investigators, volunteering to guide officers to the location where the missing youth could be found. The search led authorities back to the R61 Rashoop informal settlement, where the suspect directed them to a locked pit toilet situated directly behind his personal shack.
When law enforcement forced the structure open, they discovered the lifeless body of the teenage boy. Investigators noted that the victim’s hands, legs, and neck had been tightly bound prior to his death. Alongside the grim discovery, police seized two golf clubs from the premises, which are heavily suspected to be the weapons used in the commission of the crime.
Following the discovery, Mokoena was formally arrested and slapped with a litany of severe charges, including murder, kidnapping, and defeating or obstructing the ends of justice.
He made his first appearance before the Brits Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 11 August 2026. The presiding officer remanded him in custody, with his next scheduled court appearance set for Thursday, 13 August 2026, where he is expected to face further proceedings.
Following the rapid resolution of the missing person case, North West Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Arthur Adams released a statement regarding the breakthrough. Adams commended the investigating officers and supporting role players for their rapid response, noting that their collaborative efforts were instrumental in quickly apprehending the suspect, recovering the victim, and securing vital forensic evidence.
