KWAZULU-NATAL — Authorities have successfully taken into custody two additional suspects in the **Bonginkosi Mbatha murder**, marking a significant breakthrough in the investigation into the killing of the 51-year-old Community Policing Forum (CPF) member. The arrests stem from a coordinated, intelligence-driven sweep executed by regional law enforcement to dismantle the network responsible for the May slaying.
During a targeted operation on Tuesday, 11 August 2026, Zululand District police tracked down two 30-year-old men believed to be directly tied to the crime.
“The operation yielded highly positive results for our ongoing investigation,” stated Captain Xolani Ndlovu, spokesperson for the Zululand District Police. He noted that the swift actions of the investigative team severely disrupted the suspects’ attempts to evade capture and helped secure vital evidence.
The first suspect was located in the Hlobane area, reportedly visiting his girlfriend. Upon his detention, he cooperated with investigators and directed them to a stash in the KwaMnyathi region, where a concealed firearm and ammunition were successfully recovered. Meanwhile, the second suspect was tracked to a secure hideout in Ulundi and taken into custody without incident.
Mbatha was fatally shot at his residence in the Sizana area of Ceza on 6 May 2026. These two new detainees will now join a 25-year-old male accomplice who was apprehended immediately following the prominent CPF member’s assassination.
All three individuals are scheduled to appear before the Vryheid Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 12 August 2026.
Captain Ndlovu emphasized that the probe into Mbatha’s death remains highly active. As forensic teams subject the recovered weapons to rigorous ballistic testing to check for links to other regional criminal activities, prosecutors have warned that supplementary charges could be filed as the investigation unfolds.
