LEEUDORINGSTAD — A decisive law enforcement operation targeting infrastructure syndicates has resulted in two suspects being remanded in custody for possession of stolen copper cable in Leeudoringstad. Authorities acted swiftly on actionable intelligence to intercept the illicit transport of burned signal wires, striking a crucial blow against crimes that cripple essential community services.
The successful bust, which unfolded on Wednesday, 5 August 2026, was the result of a highly coordinated effort. Following a tip-off regarding a vehicle moving illicit materials from Makwassie toward the Kgakala Location, the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Crime Intelligence Unit immediately operationalized the information. They launched a joint task force alongside the Leeudoringstad police, the Rapid Railway Police Unit (RRPU), and private partners at Sinqobile Security.
High-Speed Interception and Raids
Task force members monitoring the identified route were alerted to two vehicles—a white Mahindra SUV and a Fiat Stilo—traveling in close proximity. Officers successfully intercepted the pair at the busy Leeudoringstad four-way stop.
Upon searching the white Mahindra SUV, authorities discovered four rolls of burned underground signal copper cable hidden inside, leading to the immediate arrest of the driver.
The operation did not end on the roadside. Investigators traced the driver of the Fiat Stilo to a residence in Extension 06, Kgakala. A subsequent search warrant executed at the premises yielded a treasure trove of incriminating evidence, including additional suspected stolen signal cable and heavy-duty equipment.

Suspects Face Immigration and Property Charges
Following their arrests, the two accused—identified as 42-year-old Christoffer Banda and 34-year-old Ivo Chick Ivo—were brought before the Leeudoringstad Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 7 August 2026.
Both men face serious charges, including the possession of suspected stolen copper cable and contravention of the Immigration Act. The magistrate denied bail, remanding both suspects in custody until their next scheduled court appearance on Tuesday, 11 August 2026.

North West Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen Arthur Adams, commended the joint task force members for their rapid response to the intelligence received. Emphasizing the broader societal cost of these offenses, Lt Gen Adams noted that copper cable theft has a devastating impact on critical infrastructure and the reliable provision of essential services to the public.
He reaffirmed that the police will continue to work aggressively alongside relevant stakeholders, private security, and railway protection units to prevent, disrupt, and combat infrastructure crimes across the province.
