KWAZULU-NATAL — Law enforcement officials neutralized a significant threat to public safety this weekend after three suspected Kranskop cash in transit robbers were fatally wounded during a shootout on Saturday, 8 August 2026. The early-morning operation targeted a group of high-profile fugitives who were already wanted for a string of violent crimes across KwaZulu-Natal.
Acting on actionable intelligence, officers tracked the suspects to a residence located in the Mambulu area. Upon approaching the property, police were met with armed resistance from an unknown number of individuals. A fierce firefight ensued in the early hours of the morning, resulting in the fatal wounding of three suspects. A subsequent sweep of the scene by authorities confirmed that the deceased were found in possession of firearms.
KwaZulu-Natal police spokespersons confirmed that the slain men were directly linked to a brazen cash in transit (CIT) heist that rattled the Kranskop CBD on 13 April 2026. During that violent incident, the criminal syndicate notoriously escalated the danger by firing shots at a local police station.
The April operation also proved deadly for the perpetrators. According to police spokespersons, one of the suspects was severely injured during the explosive detonation of the targeted CIT vehicle. That individual was later discovered dead inside an abandoned vehicle in Nkandla just one day after the initial robbery.
Despite the successful weekend operation that eliminated three key figures, authorities have warned the community that the threat has not entirely passed. An active manhunt is currently ongoing for additional suspects who managed to evade arrest during the Mambulu shootout. Law enforcement officials emphasize that the remaining fugitives are considered extremely dangerous and are believed to be heavily armed, possessing at least one high-caliber rifle.
