18-Year Prison Term for Slovo Park Child Rapist Handed Down by Mthatha Regional Court

EASTERN CAPE — A substantial 18-year prison term for a Slovo Park child rapist was finalized this week when the Mthatha Regional Court concluded a high-profile docket involving the sexual assault of a minor. The lengthy incarceration serves as the culmination of a meticulous investigation into a severe breach of trust, resulting in widespread praise from provincial law enforcement leadership for the specialized detective who spearheaded the prosecution.

The conviction stems from a disturbing incident that unfolded in the early hours of November 11, 2023. Court records indicate that a 14-year-old girl was sharing a bed with her sister, her father, and her father’s 34-year-old friend, Xola Sobhalule, at a residence in Slovo Park. At approximately 03:00, Sobhalule exploited the sleeping arrangements and raped the teenager.

A criminal docket was opened on the very same day the assault occurred. However, the suspect’s initial evasion of formal custody sparked intense local outrage. By November 14, 2023, members of the Slovo Park community tracked down and physically assaulted Sobhalule upon learning of his crimes against the minor. Following the mob confrontation, he was taken into police custody, hospitalized under strict guard, and subsequently appeared in court where he was controversially granted R2,000 bail while awaiting trial.

The judicial process reached its definitive end on Tuesday, August 4, 2026. After reviewing the evidence and the profound impact of the crime, the Mthatha Regional Court revoked his freedom and handed down an effective 18-year prison term on a single count of rape.

In the wake of the sentencing, OR Tambo District Commissioner Major General Norman Modishana issued a formal commendation regarding the successful prosecution. Major General Modishana directed specific praise toward Sergeant Mdikane, an Investigating Officer with the Mthatha Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit.

According to the District Commissioner, it was Sergeant Mdikane’s unwavering professionalism and rigorous handling of the evidence that ultimately secured the conviction. Law enforcement officials emphasize that this successful prosecution not only ensures justice for the girl child but also reinforces the state’s commitment to removing dangerous predators from the streets of the Eastern Cape.
