Behind every road that connects communities, every clinic that is built where it is needed most, every housing development and every water pipeline lies one essential ingredient: good planning. For South Africans, spatial planning is no longer just an idea; it is now a new era demanding profession.
On 6 August 2026, NTG Solutions, in partnership with the Department of Employment and Labour (DEL) and Walter Sisulu University (WSU), celebrated graduates who are entering one of South Africa’s fastest growing and most critical skills areas: Spatial Intelligence Data Science (SIDS).
While many graduation ceremonies celebrate academic achievement, this one celebrates something even greater: the opportunity for young South Africans to become part of the solution to some of the country’s most pressing development challenges. It represents a commitment to addressing the legacy of apartheid spatial planning by helping local governments deliver on what many communities have long been denied. It is about driving meaningful reform, measured by who is included, who is reached, and how emerging Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) technologies and spatial data science are being used to build more inclusive and equitable communities. From ensuring that municipalities plan infrastructure more effectively to helping the government make informed decisions using geospatial intelligence data, these graduates are now equipped with skills that directly contribute to improved service delivery, economic growth and sustainable community development.
Since opening its doors in 2022, NTG Solutions Academy has had graduates through its Spatial Intelligence Data Science (SIDS) Skills Programme (across a diverse range of sectors including transport, local government, provincial government, national government, the ICT sector and financial services), demonstrating the growing demand for spatial intelligence skills across South Africa’s economy. The SIDS Programme also responds directly to the increasing demand for Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) capabilities by combining emerging technologies, data science geomatics, development planning and unique components of spatial intelligence planning into a single practical learning pathway.
The programme is a fusion of several fields (4IR related) of study for practical use based on the experience gained over the past 21 years in the fields of Geographic Information System, Geomatics and Development Planning, inclusive of:

- Spatial Data Analysis
- Spatial Planning
- Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
- Digitisation of Spatial Information
- Programming for Spatial Applications
- Application Development
- Augmented Reality and Artificial Intelligence
- Monitoring & Reporting
By integrating these disciplines, graduates can collect, analyse, interpret and visualise complex geographic information that helps organisations make smarter, evidence-based decisions.
