JOHANNESBURG — Demonstrating a massive shift toward digital enrollment, Gauteng records over 210,000 online admissions applications within hours of its 2027 placement portal launching. The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) reported that the highly anticipated system for Grade 1 and Grade 8 placements officially opened at 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, securing 210,055 successful submissions by noon.
Gauteng MEC for Education, Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Lebogang Maile, praised the smooth rollout, noting that the massive early turnout highlights the enduring trust parents and guardians place in the province’s digital infrastructure.
Eagerness to secure school placements was evident well before the official launch. Between 7:30 a.m. and 7:59 a.m., a digital queue of 12,058 parents formed in anticipation of the portal going live. According to Maile, the platform operated smoothly throughout the morning without any significant technical glitches.
The highest volume of application traffic originated from the Ekurhuleni South and Tshwane West education districts. Specific schools saw massive localized interest. For high schools, Hoërskool Langenhoven in Tshwane West topped the list with 1,168 applications, followed closely by Alberton High School (1,098) and Hoërskool Akasia (917). On the primary level, Rachel de Beer Primary School led with 474 applications, with Laerskool Akasia (461) and Laerskool Voortrekker Eeufees (411) rounding out the top three.
As the largest educational ecosystem in South Africa, Gauteng caters to over 2.4 million students across 2,111 public ordinary schools. This includes 1,417 primary and 694 secondary institutions, alongside 37 specialized Schools of Specialisation distributed throughout the province’s 15 districts. The region’s learner population is expanding rapidly, having grown by more than 23,000 students in the past year alone—a demographic shift comparable to building 19 new 1,200-capacity schools.
First introduced in 2015 to eliminate physical queues outside school gates, the online platform has continually evolved to ensure a fair and transparent process. During the 2025 admissions cycle alone, it successfully placed roughly 400,000 entry-level students.
For the current cycle, the GDE implemented major upgrades based on extensive feedback from parents, School Governing Body (SGB) associations, principals, district officials, and call-center staff. Enhancements include bolstered stability during peak traffic, accelerated processing speeds, and superior document verification. Parents now receive automated SMS notifications and can preview a school’s Language of Learning and Teaching (LoLT), Home Language, and First Additional Language options before submitting their choices.
Maile strongly advised against procrastination, urging families to apply early to allow ample time to upload required paperwork and resolve administrative hurdles. To complete the process, applicants must navigate all five procedural steps, target between three and five schools, and submit certified supporting documents within seven days of their initial application.
The department also issued a strict warning against scammers demanding payment for guaranteed spots. Maile emphasized that the application process is entirely free and that no third party, individual, or organization has the authority to charge fees or sway placement outcomes.
