LIMPOPO — In a major breakthrough for an ongoing attempted murder investigation, a recent Limpopo unlicensed firearm arrest has led authorities to a concealed weapon connected to a weekend tavern shooting in Mohlatlareng village.
The recovery stems from a violent incident that took place on Sunday, August 2, 2026, at approximately 23:30. During the altercation at a local tavern within the Maake policing area, a male victim sustained a gunshot wound to his lower body. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he currently remains under medical care.
Acting swiftly on Monday, August 3, a joint task force comprising the Mopani Tracking Team, Maake Detectives, the Maake Tracing Unit, and Tzaneen Police launched an intelligence-driven manhunt. Although initial efforts to apprehend the primary suspected shooter at his residence proved fruitless, follow-up intelligence pointed investigators toward a 24-year-old man believed to be hiding the weapon used in the attack.
Upon being questioned, the 24-year-old admitted to taking possession of the firearm. He subsequently cooperated with law enforcement, leading them to a separate residence where the weapon had been stashed. Officers discovered a 9mm pistol wrapped in clothing alongside an empty magazine. Notably, the firearm’s serial number had been intentionally filed off to evade tracing. Unable to produce a valid license for the weapon, the man was immediately taken into custody on charges of illegal possession.
While the individual who concealed the weapon is now behind bars, the hunt for the person who actually pulled the trigger remains active. Provincial Commissioner of Limpopo, Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers, praised the multi-unit operational team for their rapid response and dedication to community safety.
“The recovery of an illegal firearm is a significant step in preventing further violent crimes,” stated Lieutenant General Scheepers.
The arrested 24-year-old is scheduled to appear before the Maake Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, to formally face charges of possessing an unlicensed firearm. Meanwhile, police investigations to track down and arrest the primary suspect linked to the attempted murder are actively continuing.
