Bloemfontein Guesthouse Owner Arrested for Housing Undocumented Individuals

BLOEMFONTEIN — Bloemfontein guesthouse owner has been arrested and appeared in court for allegedly housing undocumented individuals, following an intelligence-driven police operation in the Free State.

Lyndon Adentuji Odili, a 56-year-old foreign national, appeared in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court after being arrested for contravening the Immigration Act, 2002 (Act 13 of 2002). Odili was granted R10,000 bail, and his case has been postponed to 31 July 2026 pending further investigation.

The arrest occurred on Tuesday after law enforcement received a tip-off regarding several undocumented individuals spotted at a guesthouse along Raymond Mhlaba Street. According to police, the individuals were allegedly being hidden at the premises in reaction to a multidisciplinary operation targeting anti-foreigner sentiments during planned protests scheduled for the same day.

Upon arriving at the establishment, officers conducted a thorough search of the property and discovered 18 undocumented foreign nationals inside without the necessary legal authorization to reside in South Africa.

Odili was summoned to the scene and subsequently arrested under Section 40(1) of the Criminal Procedure Act, 1977 (Act 51 of 1977). He now faces 18 counts of aiding, abetting, assisting, enabling, or helping illegal foreigners. Separate dockets have also been opened against the 18 undocumented individuals for illegal entry and stay within the country.

Law enforcement confirmed the details of the arrest in a statement released on Wednesday. The government assured citizens that it is actively managing migration through lawful, coordinated, and constitutional measures, even as planned demonstrations against illegal migration took place across the country.

Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thabang Lesia commended the officers for their swift reaction to the intelligence. He reiterated a strict warning to business and property owners, stating that those who deliberately bypass the country’s immigration laws to harbor undocumented individuals will face the full might of the law.
