Hopetown Man Sentenced for Statutory Rape of 14-Year-Old Girl

HOPETOWN – A 19-year-old man was convicted and sentenced in the Hopetown Regional Court on Tuesday, 09 June 2026, for the statutory rape of a 14-year-old girl in Hopetown.

The court sentenced the accused to 18 months of imprisonment, which was wholly suspended for a period of three years. Additionally, the court ordered that the accused’s name be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders.

The investigation began on 13 August 2025, when the victim’s biological mother, assisted by a social worker, fetched the 14-year-old from school and took her to a local clinic. During the visit, a nurse administered a pregnancy test and discovered the victim was four months pregnant. The mother reported the matter to the police the following day, on 14 August 2025.

Following an investigation, the accused was arrested and charged with statutory rape. He was subsequently released on bail pending his trial.

The successful prosecution reaffirms the South African Police Service’s (SAPS) commitment to preventing and investigating crimes against women and children in the Northern Cape. The Pixley Ka Seme District Police Management commended Detective Sergeant Ricardo Kock of the Hopetown Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit for his professionalism and dedication during the investigation that led to the conviction.
