A Tshwane court has imposed a severe sentence on a stepfather convicted of multiple sexual offences against a minor, marking a significant victory for the Ga-Rankuwa Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit of the South African Police Service (SAPS).
The case centers on a victim who was 12 years old during the commission of the crimes. Between 2018 and 2021, she resided with her biological mother and the accused, her stepfather. The abuse came to light during a school holiday visit to her biological father, when she disclosed the sexual abuse and other ill-treatment to her stepmother.
Following the disclosure, SAPS opened a criminal investigation. The docket was assigned to Warrant Officer Freddy Alfred Maile of the Ga-Rankuwa FCS Unit. A critical phase of the probe involved the seizure and forensic examination of electronic devices linked to the accused. Data recovered from these devices provided pivotal evidence that strengthened the State’s case.
On 13 May 2026, the court found the accused guilty on four charges:
– Rape
– Sexual Assault
– Crimen Injuria
– Possession of Child Pornography
In sentencing, the court handed down five concurrent life imprisonment terms, plus an additional 60 years’ imprisonment.
Major General Samuel Thine, Tshwane District Commissioner, publicly commended Warrant Officer Maile for his professional and meticulous handling of the investigation.
“This successful prosecution underscores the dedication of SAPS members to ensuring perpetrators of crimes against women and children face justice,” Major General Thine stated. “Warrant Officer Maile’s diligence, alongside the efforts of the prosecution team and all partners involved, has delivered justice for the victim.”
The Tshwane District SAPS reaffirmed its ongoing commitment to prioritizing investigations involving vulnerable persons and leveraging forensic technology to secure convictions in gender-based violence and child protection cases.
