A 30-year-old tavern owner from Lower Ngxaxha locality, Maqhubini A/A, has been arrested for the alleged murder of a 34-year-old male patron from Milani locality over an unpaid liquor debt.
The incident took place on Monday, 25 May 2026, at approximately 09:30, according to police reports.
Authorities allege that the tavern owner fetched the victim from his homestead and assaulted him inside the tavern, including knocking him against a wall. The alleged assault stemmed from an undisclosed amount of money owed for liquor.
Police were summoned to the crime scene after the victim lost consciousness. He was later declared dead.
The tavern owner was arrested and charged with murder. He is scheduled to appear before the Qumbu Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 26 May 2026.
Acting OR Tambo District Commissioner, Brigadier Vukile Ntuli, expressed shock over the killing.
“It is a very sad situation that someone had to die for allegedly owing someone money. Police must leave no stone unturned in bringing a watertight case before the court of law for justice to be served,” Brigadier Ntuli said.
He extended his heartfelt condolences to the deceased’s family and friends.
