Man Arrested for Perjury in Polokwane After Falsely Reporting Laptop Theft

A 26-year-old man was arrested on Thursday, 23 April 2026, at approximately 16:00 in Polokwane on a charge of perjury.

The arrest stems from an incident in which the suspect initially opened a theft case, alleging that his laptop had been stolen at a supermarket parcel counter in Polokwane.

During follow-up investigations, the investigating officer contacted the complainant to obtain further details regarding the reported theft. While arrangements were being made to verify the incident through available surveillance footage, the complainant admitted that the laptop had not been stolen and was in his possession at his residence in Mamadimo Park.

Police proceeded to the residence, where the suspect produced the laptop. The serial number of the device matched that of the item previously reported as stolen.

Upon further questioning, the suspect indicated that he had falsely reported the theft with the intention of claiming from an insurance provider. He was subsequently arrested and charged with perjury.

The suspect is expected to appear before the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 24 April 2026.
