The Eastern Cape South African Police Service (SAPS) has welcomed the life sentences imposed on two convicted rapists by the Gqeberha Regional Court, citing the outcome as a significant step in the fight against gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF).
Sherwin Terreblanche, 26, and Jadrion Jaggers, 26, were sentenced to life imprisonment on Wednesday, 4 February 2026, for the rape of a 19-year-old woman. The crime was committed in March 2023.
According to evidence presented in court, the victim was lured to a house in Arries Street, Gelvandale, under false pretences. At approximately 16:00, she was raped by one of the accused while the second accused restrained her.
The victim reported the rape to the police on 3 October 2023, having initially feared retaliation from the accused. A swift investigation by Detective Constable Mihlali Dingaan of the Gqeberha Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit led to the arrest of both suspects on 6 October 2023.
Although Terreblanche and Jaggers were initially released on bail, they later violated their bail conditions. They were subsequently re-arrested and remained in custody until their sentencing.
The SAPS praised the work of Detective Constable Dingaan, whose investigation secured the conviction. In a statement, the service reiterated its commitment to combating GBVF and urged victims and survivors to report crimes.
“Silence protects perpetrators — reporting saves lives and ensures that offenders are held accountable to the full might of the law,” the SAPS stated.
