The Mokopane Regional Court has imposed a 20-year direct prison sentence on a 25-year-old woman for an acid attack that left two people injured.
Yvonne Maja was sentenced on Monday, 09 February 2026, after being convicted on 01 December 2025. She received 18 years’ direct imprisonment for attempted murder and a further two years’ direct imprisonment for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. The sentences will run consecutively.
The court heard that on 13 October 2024, at approximately 17:30, Maja went to her ex-boyfriend’s residence in Mogoto Mabereng, Zebediela, within the Moletlane policing area. There, she found him with his new partner. An argument broke out, during which Maja insulted the 27-year-old woman.
Maja then poured acid on the female victim’s face. The substance flowed over her body, causing severe injuries. The acid also affected the 28-year-old male victim, who sustained less serious injuries.
Both victims were rushed to Zebediela Hospital. Due to the severity of her injuries, the female victim was subsequently transferred to Mankweng Hospital, where she remained hospitalised for approximately seven months.
The accused was traced and arrested on 14 February 2025. She made her initial appearance at the Lebowakgomo Magistrate’s Court, where she was granted bail of R3,000. The case was later transferred to the Mokopane Regional Court for trial.
