Police Investigate Murder-Suicide and Illegal Firearms in Burgersfort

Limpopo police have opened cases of murder and an inquest following a fatal shooting incident near Twin City Mall on Sunday, 08 February 2026.

According to police reports, authorities responded to a shooting at approximately 13:54 along Dirk Winterbach Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered a 54-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman, reported to be husband and wife, lying with gunshot wounds on a passageway. Both were transported to a local hospital where they later died from their injuries.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the woman was standing on the passageway when a blue Audi sedan with Gauteng registration stopped beside her. The driver, identified as the deceased 54-year-old man, allegedly exited the vehicle, shot the woman, and then turned the weapon on himself.

While the exact motive remains unknown, police have stated that domestic-related issues cannot be ruled out.

During the processing of the crime scene, police recovered the pistol used in the incident along with empty cartridges. A subsequent search of the suspect’s Audi led to the discovery of additional weapons: one rifle, 21 live 9mm rounds, and 18 live rifle rounds.

Preliminary findings confirm that all recovered firearms and ammunition belonged to the suspect. Investigations are now underway to establish how he came to possess them.

The blue Audi sedan has been confiscated as part of the ongoing investigation. Police confirm that investigations are continuing.
