Five Arrested, Firearms and Drugs Seized After Police Shootout

A high-speed chase and shootout in the Seawinds area of Muizenberg early this morning resulted in the arrest of five suspects and the recovery of illegal firearms and narcotics.

According to police reports, members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) and Law Enforcement were on patrol at approximately 00:50 when they acted on intelligence regarding a wanted suspect travelling in a white Nissan Almera with occupants allegedly in possession of illegal firearms.

The vehicle was located in Seawinds. During the ensuing pursuit, the driver of the Almera fired shots at the officials. Police did not initially retaliate and continued the chase down St. Luke Street.

The suspects’ vehicle suddenly stopped, and its occupants disembarked, opening fire on the pursuing officers. SAPS and Law Enforcement members then returned fire.

Five suspects, aged between 16 and 29, were apprehended at the scene. Additional suspects fired at police and managed to flee into a neighbouring informal settlement, evading arrest.

A subsequent investigation revealed that two 20-year-old suspects had sustained gunshot wounds. Both were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. One was later discharged and taken directly into custody, while the other remains under police guard in hospital.

A search of the vehicle led to the seizure of four firearms—two of which had their serial numbers removed—50 rounds of ammunition, mandrax tablets, and several sachets of tik (methamphetamine).

The arrested individuals face multiple charges, including attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, possession of prohibited firearms, and possession of drugs. They are scheduled to appear in the Muizenberg Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 9 February 2026.

Authorities confirmed no damage to property was reported. The investigation is ongoing.
