Flying Squad Arrests Hijackers After Manenberg Shootout

Two men were arrested in Manenberg in the early hours of Monday following a police confrontation.

Members of the Maitland Flying Squad, acting on a hijacking report, located a stolen Volkswagen Polo Vivo in Jade Crescent at approximately 01:50. The vehicle had been hijacked earlier in Athlone.

Upon police arrival, three suspects fled on foot. One suspect drew a firearm and pointed it at officers, who responded with gunfire, wounding him in the right leg. The injured suspect was apprehended on a nearby road after dropping the weapon. A search found two cellphones, bank cards, and an amplifier in his possession.

A 24-year-old and a 36-year-old suspect were arrested for possession of a hijacked vehicle, attempted murder, possession of a replica firearm, and possession of suspected stolen property. They are due to appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court once charged.
