On Monday, 02 February 2026, members of the Anti-Economic and Extortion Crime Task Team arrested a 24-year-old suspect in Guguletu, Western Cape, for extortion, illegal possession of ammunition, and possession of drugs.
At approximately 14:00, task team members, posted in the area to address violent crime, responded to gunshots heard near the Guguletu SAPS station. They noticed a suspicious male with a black sling bag. A search found cash and ammunition on his person. A further search of his home uncovered more ammunition and Mandrax tablets. The suspect was actively extorting spaza shops at the time of his arrest.
Confiscated items include 200 Mandrax tablets, 65 rounds of 9mm ammunition, 13 rifle rounds, and R1,710.00 in cash.
The suspect is detained at Guguletu SAPS and will appear in the Athlone Magistrates’ Court once charged. Extortion is a top crime priority in the Western Cape.
