Woman Swept Away, Body Recovered Near White River

A 44-year-old woman died after being swept away by a strong current while crossing a stream at Msholozi on 14 January 2026 at approximately 21:00.

The deceased, Esther Amina Mathenjwa, was the first of a group to attempt the crossing. Witnesses stated her bucket, used for selling vetkoek at a local school, was swept away first. As she tried to retrieve it, she was also carried off by the current.

A community search that night was unsuccessful. On 15 January 2026, the SAPS Diving Unit and community members recovered her body approximately 5 km downstream.

Police are investigating the incident.
