Two male suspects, aged 25 and 45, were arrested in Mthatha’s Callaway Street on Monday, 12 January 2026, following a business robbery in Qumbu.
At approximately 10:40 that morning, two unknown men entered a clothing shop in the Qumbu CBD. One suspect pointed a firearm at staff, locked them in an office, and demanded keys to a cell phone cabinet. The pair stole fourteen new cell phones, valued at approximately R34,000, placed them in a black school bag, and fled.
An investigation involving the Mthatha Flying Squad, K9 Unit, and a private Tracker Unit located the suspects in Mthatha. All fourteen stolen phones were recovered from their possession. Police verification determined the firearm used was a toy gun.

The suspects, from Coffee Bay and Port St Johns, will appear in the Qumbu Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 13 January 2026, charged with armed business robbery and possession of suspected stolen property.
