In yet another senseless and heartbreaking act of violence, a motorist lost their life late on 30 December 2025 when half-bricks were thrown from an overpass onto the N1 South. The deadly incident took place between approximately 23:30 and midnight, in the stretch between the Maraisburg and N17 off-ramps – suspected to be the New Canada Bridge area.
A silver Toyota was directly hit; the brick smashed through the windshield, inflicting fatal injuries on the driver, who was tragically declared deceased on the scene by paramedics. No other injuries were reported from this targeted attack.
This devastating loss hits even harder knowing it is *not an isolated event*. A similar incident was reported on the very same bridge on 8 June 2025, highlighting a chilling pattern of danger in this notorious hotspot. How many more lives must be shattered before meaningful action – like increased patrols, barriers, or surveillance – puts an end to these cowardly attacks?
Picture it: heading home on a familiar highway, perhaps reflecting on the year ending, only for a random act of malice from above to steal everything in a split second. A family now faces the new year without their loved one, holidays forever tainted by grief.
Street lights on the N1 South from 14th Avenue remain non-operational, compounding the risks in this poorly lit danger zone.
Authorities are urged to treat this with the utmost urgency, investigating links between the incidents and bringing perpetrators to justice.
