Five Accused in South African Foreign Recruitment Case Granted Bail

The Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court granted bail on Monday to five individuals, including a South African radio presenter, arrested on charges related to recruiting fighters for Russia.

The accused are radio presenter Nontando “Nolo” Manula and four men. Authorities stated three of the men were apprehended last week at an airport while attempting to board a flight to Russia via the United Arab Emirates.

The National Prosecuting Authority did not oppose bail. A state prosecutor stated, “We do not have grounds to oppose.” Bail amounts were set at varying levels based on each accused’s alleged role.

The prosecutor informed the court that evidence shows Manula traveled to Russia approximately five times since September. As a condition of bail, the court barred her from leaving South Africa. She may travel domestically for work with permission from the investigating officer.

The case was postponed to February 10 next year for further investigation.

In a separate matter, police confirmed an investigation into Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, daughter of former President Jacob Zuma, for allegedly trafficking 17 men to fight for Russia. That investigation is ongoing.
