A recent conviction and sentencing have underscored the relentless efforts of specialised police units in combating gender-based violence. The Parkweg Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit has secured a life imprisonment sentence for a perpetrator in a rape case dating back to August 2022.
The incident occurred on 28 August 2022 near Lourier Park. The victim, who had been visiting her mother for the weekend, was en route to board a taxi to return to her school hostel in Bainsvlei. Her uncle volunteered to accompany her to the bus stop. However, while walking near Rooidam, the uncle allegedly threatened the victim’s life and raped her before fleeing the scene.
Demonstrating immense courage, the victim immediately returned home and reported the crime to her family, who promptly contacted the police. A rape case was officially registered at the Parkweg Police Station and assigned to Sergeant Tshitso Mofokeng of the Parkweg FCS Unit.
Through diligent investigation and collaboration with the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the suspect was traced and arrested on 8 September 2022. He was later released on bail pending trial.
After continued court proceedings, the accused was found guilty on a charge of rape. The court handed down a sentence of life imprisonment. Furthermore, his name will be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders.
