One Arrested, One at Large After Chase Involving Stolen Car and Shooting of Security Guard

A high-speed pursuit along the N2 on Tuesday culminated in the arrest of a heavily armed suspect and the recovery of a stolen vehicle, a rifle, and an assault rifle.

The incident began at approximately 11:00 when a vehicle tracking company detected a stolen vehicle travelling north on the N2 highway from uMlazi. A coordinated chase ensued, with multiple police units joining the pursuit.

In Verulam, a private security company attempted to intercept the vehicle. One of the occupants inside the stolen car responded by opening fire with a rifle, striking and injuring a security guard in the leg. The suspects continued their flight.

The pursuit reached its climax at Clerence Park, where members of the Provincial Task Team and Durban K9 unit successfully intercepted the vehicle. The suspects then abandoned the car and fled on foot into nearby bushland.

A search of the abandoned vehicle yielded a significant cache: one rifle and over one hundred (100) rounds of ammunition. Police K9 units were deployed into the bush to track the fleeing suspects.
