The desperate saga of 19 South African men trapped in the Ukraine conflict has taken a sinister turn, with their families alleging a coordinated effort to erase their identities and obscure the trail of those responsible for recruiting them.
The group departed South Africa in July under the guise of a specialized security and bodyguard training program in Russia. Upon arrival, however, they were allegedly coerced into joining Russian forces fighting against Ukraine. For four months, the men have pleaded to be repatriated, expressing grave fear for their lives.
Now, a new layer of distress has emerged. Relatives confirm the men have been issued Russian military identification documents. A document shown to reporters, written in Russian and believed to be issued by the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation, contains altered personal details.
“We can confirm that they’ve been issued with new identity documents, but what is worrying is that some of their names have been changed and their dates of birth,” said a family spokesperson. “We don’t know what the reason for this is or whether it is part of the plan by those behind this whole thing to make it harder for the authorities to find them.”
The families fear the identity changes are a deliberate tactic to complicate rescue and investigation efforts. Their concerns are compounded by the news that the group has been split up. One relative stated his brother and two others have now been deployed to an active combat zone.
Compounding the anguish, the families say the recruiters have vanished. “The individuals who recruited the men have gone to ground,” the family spokesperson said. “We really don’t know what is happening and going forward what will happen. We don’t know who to turn to for answers.”
South African authorities have confirmed that two cases related to the recruitment of the men are under investigation. The families now wait in terror, fearing that the altered identities and the disappearance of the recruiters are signs of an escalating effort to conceal the men’s fates and the circumstances that delivered them into a war zone.
