In a significant breakthrough, two suspects have been arrested and charged in connection with the deadly shooting of two police officers in Ivory Park, Midrand, last Friday evening. The arrests follow an intelligence-driven operation that recovered the slain officers’ service weapons.
According to police reports, the operation, conducted in Mamelodi East, Pretoria, led to the recovery of an R5 rifle and a 9mm pistol. Several rounds of ammunition were also seized. The firearms have been positively identified as belonging to the two officers who were killed in the line of duty.
The suspects currently face charges related to the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. Police authorities confirmed that while the investigation into the murders of the officers is ongoing, the initial charges are focused on the illegal possession of the weapons.
A police spokesperson indicated that the search continues for other suspects linked to the case, as well as for an additional missing 9mm state-issued pistol.
The National Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS), General Fannie Masemola, publicly commended the investigative team. General Masemola applauded officers for “working tirelessly and moving with speed to find the stolen firearms and ultimately find those responsible for the murders of both police officers.”
The swift arrests and recovery of the firearms mark a critical development in a case that has underscored the dangers faced by law enforcement personnel. The community of Ivory Park and the wider Midrand area have been awaiting progress since the tragic shooting last week.
