Two Arrested in Rondebosch Hijacking, Unlicensed Firearm Seized

Two suspects are in police custody following their arrest by members of the Maitland Flying Squad for the possession of an unlicensed firearm, an incident linked to a recent hijacking.

The arrest on Monday, November 24, 2025, was precipitated by a swift police response to a complaint about a courier company truck that was hijacked on Main Road in Rondebosch on Sunday afternoon.

According to reports, the hijacked truck and its driver were later located on the M3 highway. Following up on intelligence, Flying Squad officers began searching for suspects believed to be involved in the crime and traveling in a Volkswagen Polo.

Their investigation led them to Baden Powell Drive in Rocklands, where they pulled over a vehicle matching the description, albeit with different license plates. A subsequent search of the VW Polo yielded critical evidence. Officers discovered the vehicle’s correct number plates concealed beneath a seat. Furthermore, a 9mm Luger pistol was found hidden within one of the car’s air vents.

The two male suspects, aged 22 and 36, were immediately placed under arrest. They were detained at the Mitchells Plain SAPS on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm.

The suspects are expected to be formally charged and make their initial appearance in the Mitchells Plain Magistrates’ Court in the coming days.
