A 57-year-old man is in custody after a multi-unit law enforcement operation uncovered suspected stolen copper cable at a scrap metal yard in Parys.
The successful operation was conducted on Wednesday at a premises on King Street. It was a collaborative effort involving the Parys South African Police Service (SAPS), the Welkom Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), Sasolburg K9 unit, Provincial FLASH, and members of the Fezile Dabi District DOCC. Utility providers Eskom and Telkom, as well as the Parys Municipality, also participated in the raid.
During the search, authorities discovered a quantity of copper cables stored in a room on the property. The cables, with an estimated street value of R6,552.00, are suspected to have been stolen from Telkom, Eskom, and the local municipality.
The suspect was arrested on the scene for possession of suspected stolen property. He is expected to make his initial appearance before the Parys Magistrate’s Court in the coming days to face the formal charge.
