A high-risk police operation escalated into a dramatic shootout on Jakes Gerwel Drive on Wednesday morning, resulting in one suspect fatally wounded and four others arrested.
The incident began when members of the elite National Intervention Unit (NIU) acted on intelligence regarding a group of armed suspects traveling in a Toyota Hilux. Officers located and began following the vehicle from the Nyanga area.
The situation turned violent when the suspects spotted the police vehicle on Jakes Gerwel Drive. According to police reports, the occupants of the Hilux opened fire on the NIU members. Police returned fire, leading to an exchange of gunfire.
One adult male suspect was fatally wounded in the confrontation. His four accomplices were apprehended at the scene.
A significant cache of weapons was recovered following the shootout. Police confirmed the seizure of an AK47 rifle, two 9mm pistols, and corresponding ammunition.

The suspects’ vehicle collided with two private cars during the incident, causing damage to both. No civilians were reported injured.
The four arrested suspects, aged between 27 and 45, are currently in police detention. They are expected to make their first court appearance in Mitchell’s Plain on a series of serious charges, including possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, attempted murder, and an attack on police officers.
As is standard procedure in cases where a death occurs as a result of police action, the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting of the one suspect have been referred to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) for investigation.
