The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) will on Monday present its interim findings into the multimillion-rand corruption scandal at Tembisa Hospital, a case that has been marred by the assassination of a key whistleblower.
The media briefing will be led by the head of the SIU, Advocate Andy Mothibi. He will be joined by Health Minister Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, and the provincial Health MEC, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko.
This briefing marks a significant step in the high-profile investigation, offering the public and stakeholders a formal update on the progress and findings uncovered by the unit to date. The SIU stated that the release of its interim report underscores its commitment to “transparency and accountability” in the matter.
The investigation was launched after Advocate Mothibi previously revealed that billions of rands were allegedly siphoned from Tembisa Hospital through a series of illicit contracts. The scale of the alleged corruption prompted President Cyril Ramaphosa to sign a proclamation in 2023, officially authorizing the SIU probe.
The case took a tragic turn with the murder of Babita Deokaran, a senior finance official at the hospital and a key whistleblower. Deokaran was assassinated in a hail of bullets outside her southern Johannesburg home in August 2021. Her killing, described as a “hit-style” execution, was widely believed to be an attempt to silence her regarding the corruption she had helped uncover.
Monday’s briefing is highly anticipated, as it is expected to shed light on the extent of the financial malfeasance at the public health facility and the progress made in holding those responsible to account.
