In a major week-long operation targeting gender-based violence, South African Police Service (SAPS) units have arrested more than 190 suspects wanted in connection with rape and sexual offences.
The arrests, which took place from September 1st to September 7th, 2025, are a key part of the police service’s intensive 90-day Blitz operation. According to an SAPS statement, the nationwide effort is specifically designed to prevent and combat gender-based violence and femicide, focusing on protecting women, children, and other vulnerable groups.
The operation yielded 196 arrests of rape suspects across the country. A detailed breakdown shows that from this total, 96 individuals were apprehended for rape and a further 13 for sexual offences. These suspects were tracked down and arrested in multiple provinces, underscoring the national scale of the initiative.
In a significant breakthrough linked to the operation, members of the Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offenses unit arrested a 41-year-old alleged serial rapist on September 11th. The suspect is connected to a staggering 45 cases of serious crime, including rape, kidnapping, robbery, and assault.
The alleged serial offender’s crimes span nearly two decades, with cases reported at the Diepkloof and Orlando Police Stations, as well as two cases in the North West Province, occurring between 2008 and 2025. Police reports indicate he targeted female victims between the ages of 14 and 55. The suspect allegedly used a firearm and a knife to threaten his victims and wore a balaclava and mask to conceal his identity during the attacks.
The SAPS reiterated its commitment to the operation, stating that specialized investigators remain focused on ensuring sexual predators are brought to justice and securing lengthy convictions for perpetrators of gender-based violence. The force has prioritized this fight through various initiatives, including the ongoing blitz, which aims to accelerate efforts to ensure public safety and security.
