Court Sentences Rapist to 12 Years Imprisonment

The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Northern Cape has reaffirmed its commitment to securing justice for victims of gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) following a successful conviction in the Mothibistad Regional Court.

Tshepo Richard Chipanga, 37, was sentenced to an effective 12 years’ imprisonment on Monday, 08 September 2025, for the rape of a 28-year-old woman.

The court heard that the incident occurred on the evening of 18 February 2023 at approximately 21:50. The victim was walking home in Mapoteng Village when she was accosted by Chipanga. The accused threatened her with a firearm and forcefully led her to his residence. There, he sexually assaulted her and subsequently coerced her to bathe in an attempt to destroy evidence following the ordeal.
