Police Nab Five Suspected Extortionists in Hammersdale Dawn Raid

In a significant multi-unit operation, five suspected extortionists believed to be terrorising the Mpumalanga Township in Hammersdale and surrounding areas were arrested in the early hours of Thursday morning, 4 September 2025.

The intelligence-driven operation was executed by a dedicated team comprising members of the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Organised Crime Unit, the Provincial Combat Team, the Pinetown TRT, and K9 Units from Empangeni and Durban Central. They were supported by the Pietermaritzburg team and the Provincial Criminal Record Centre.

Acting on search warrants, the officers targeted a house in Mpumalanga Township. Four of the suspects were apprehended inside the main dwelling. A search of the premises led to the discovery of three unlicensed firearms and several rounds of ammunition.

A fifth suspect was located in a separate rondavel on the same property. He was found in possession of an additional unlicensed firearm, ammunition, and 150 mandrax tablets.

The suspects, whose ages range from 18 to 40, are believed to be central to a spate of extortion and other violent crimes that have plagued the local community.

All five individuals are scheduled to appear before the Mpumalanga Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 5 September 2025. They face multiple charges, including possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, and possession of, and dealing in, drugs.
