Residents of the former Umjindi Local Municipality have taken to the streets, demanding the reversal of its 2016 merger with the Greater Mbombela Municipality. Protesters blocked roads in Barberton, bringing the town to a standstill and disrupting transport, schooling, and businesses.
“We Want a Divorce” – Residents Reject Merger
The community claims the amalgamation has led to poor service delivery, crumbling infrastructure, and a lack of job opportunities. They are now calling on the Municipal Demarcation Board (MDB) to rescind its decision and restore Umjindi as a standalone municipality.
“We were promised heaven and earth, but instead, we got nothing,” said a local councillor participating in the protest. “Service delivery has collapsed, our people are sidelined in employment, and our infrastructure is neglected. We want a total divorce from Mbombela.”
Protests Cause Major Disruptions
The demonstrations have severely impacted daily life in Barberton. Public transport has been halted, learners were unable to attend school, and workers struggled to reach their jobs. Police were deployed to disperse crowds and clear barricades, but tensions remain high.
Protesters insist they will continue their demonstrations until government officials address their grievances. Some have even threatened to boycott the 2026 local government elections if their demands are ignored.
Municipal Response
Mbombela Mayor Sibongile Makhushe-Mazibuko acknowledged the protest but defended the merger, stating that the municipality is working to improve service delivery. She announced the distribution of new municipal equipment to enhance services across the region.
However, residents remain unconvinced. Many argue that the merger was implemented without proper consultation and has only worsened living conditions.
